Caricature Markers

If you are not a caricature artist, nor have any interest in becoming one, you will probably find this entry incredibly dull.

I am attempting to re-enter the caricature-drawing world, but a few things have changed in my absence; most notably, the main marker I always used, the Dixon Markette, has been drastically altered.

In an attempt to find a replacement, I bought one of every kind of black marker I could find, and then threw in some I already owned and tested them all out. I thought I'd share the results for other caricature artists.

These are the markers I used for this demo.

They are, in order from left to right, Tria, Artwin, Chartpak Fine Tip, Chartpak, Copic, Sharpie, Prismacolor, the new Markette, and the old Markette.

First, we'll start with the old Markette, as it's what I'm comparing the rest to.

The older Markette isn't without its flaws, but it was a great marker for getting a variety of line widths, and its best feature was the ease with which one could create lines that taper into nothingness.

I drew an eye with one to use to compare.

Notice how fine the eyelashes are, and how smoothly lines fade, creating the illusion of highlight.

Now the new Markette.

The tip shape was changed, probably because one of the problems with the former design was that the tip might snap off unexpectedly.

Unfortunately, it was the tip shape of the original Markette that was so appealing. The new tip is much harder to get definition out of - it lends itself to blobbiness and uniformity of line width.

Next up is the Prismacolor marker. This is a double tipped marker, with a fine tip and a broad tip. I only used the fine tip for the purposes of this review, because while some caricature artists are able to use a heavy chisel tip to make good drawings, I am not one of them.

This is a marker I've used in the past with some success, though it isn't as flexible as I'd like it to be. It's good for fine lines, but difficult to get thicker ones.

Not a bad option though.

After that, we have the good old Sharpie.

If you're in a pinch, you can probably manage with one. It's not the greatest marker out there, but if it's a newer one you can get some fairly good lines. After several uses, though, they get pretty rough to work with.

Not the finest lines, but there are worse options.

Next is the Copic.

This one is all about your personal style. It's used by a lot of caricature artists, and you never need to buy a new one because the nibs are replaceable, and the ink is refillable. It has a very flexible brush tip, but in my experience it's almost too flexible. You can draw very quickly, but you lose a little bit of line control.

Lines can get very thick or very thin. Using it feels more like brush and ink than it does like a marker.

After that was the Chartpak marker.

I heard mention of this one on a caricature blog some time ago, so I bought it despite my hesitancy to use chisel tips. The tip is surprisingly flexible, giving it a slightly brushy feel that I almost liked, but the ink bled everywhere.

It was too thick anyways, but unless I can find some paper that this won't bleed on, it will probably never be used again.

Its companion, the Chartpak Fine Tip, had the same issue.

I really liked the tip on this one, but it still ended up looking like watercolors. Not as bad as the regular Chartpak, but not good enough for me to use it for something I would try to sell. I only tried it on one kind of paper, so if another kind stops the bleeding problem I'd give it another chance.

The next one is an Artwin marker.

It feels pretty similar to the Prismacolor, but was less expensive. Not bad. Not a Markette, but I would use it.

I only tried the medium tip side of it; the fine tip is more like a pen than a marker.

Last, and my favorite, was the Tria.

I had heard of the marker, but was told it was basically the same as the Prismacolor. They've recently updated the marker, and now it's very similar to the Copic, but the important difference is in flexibility. The brush tip is shorter than the Copic's which made it easier to manage. I liked the effects I got with it, though I haven't tested it out completely. It has the brush tip, a chisel tip, and a pen tip.

So, while none of the markers can replace exactly what the older Markette had, I don't think I'm completely lost. Now I'm going to go draw.

So, I've started an Etsy store, and all I've been doing lately is making jewelry. I'm actually kind of obsessed. I posted a link to the store, so I wasn't going to post pictures of the stuff I've been doing, but then it dawned on me that some of that stuff might actually sell and therefore not be available for looking at. Maybe that's a bit optimistic of me, but here's pictures anyways. The bunnies are all for my roommate, and the rest is in my shop.

More coming soon. I have two more pins started - a hedgehog, and a t-rex with a tophat and teacup. Also a necklace with gingko leaves. And one more bunny pin for my roommate. I've been very busy.

This is a bird painting I started forever ago and just now got around to finishing.

A friend of mine has two pugs, and I've been promising I would draw them for forever. I ended up painting them instead, as part of an art trade.

I went back to the figure drawing group again recently, bringing just some crayola markers. I actually really like the effect I got with them.

My roommate has a wall dedicated to art of her dog, and we thought my cat might feel a little left out, so I painted this of her today.

Lately I've been interested in really detailed and intricate, almost patterned stuff.

It started with a little painting of Matryoshka-doll-like creatures. (6x9", acrylic)

Then I got really wrapped up in creating a new backing for a set of hooks to hang up in my new room (more about that later.) It formerly had a vintage-y looking coffee ad, but I wanted to make it mine. When I noticed chipboard was almost exactly the same color as the frame, I cut a new back for it and just started doodling with microns and white colored pencil. I left a space for writing, but had no idea what I wanted to put, so I ended up putting what had been my senior quote for the high school yearbook; "Live all the days of your life." I figure it's a good reminder to have. My jewelry hangs on this now.

Last, I did these small (4x6") paintings in gouache over the past couple of days while being a couch potato. We just got upgraded on our cable, so things like Animal Planet and Discovery channel that I've never have had available have been sucking up my free time.

So the big news is that I've moved. Instead of living half an hour outside of Asheville, I now reside in the heart of it, which is working out great so far. I'm sharing an apartment with an awesome roommate, her dog, and my cat. It's a little crowded sometimes, and there's a bit of pet drama once in a while, but it's starting to feel like home and I love it.

I've been attending a weekly figure drawing session. I've only gone twice so far, but I'm enjoying getting back into some sort of classically academic drawing.

Here's some of what I ended up with. One session was done with woodless graphite pencils, the other with prismacolor art stix. Poses were mostly 10-15 minutes.

Haven't posted in a long time, I know. There's been a lot happening with me lately, and art has been lower on my priorities than usual.

So I haven't done a lot of artwork, but I have taken to embroidering on scraps of fabric. I have no idea what to do with any of these little scraps, but I like them and someday I'm sure I'll find a use for them. The process of embroidering is relaxing to me, and it's something I can do when it's slow at work or while watching movies, so it's been an easy way to be creative.

Here's some of my little scraps I've done so far.

And then there's a project I did for a dear friend. He asked me to fancy up a shirt of his with his namesake. There's a cardinal on the front, of which I didn't really get a great picture, and Cardinale written on the back.

That's it for now. Maybe by next posting I'll have come up with a use for the little pieces.

Watercolor painting of a feather on a rocky beach, based off a photo I took ages ago. I've always liked the image, but in retrospect it makes sort of a dull painting. It was more of practice anyways; I love watercolors, but don't use them often, so this was a nice challenge. Used some watercolor pencil too - it helps. Size is somewhere near 11"x14" and I don't think this photo came out very well, but I can't seem to get better.

I know, I've been really lame the last few months.

So North Carolina's pretty boring, my job's okay but not exactly challenging (except in a "how can I make myself look busy today? kind of way) and snow's pretty for about five minutes and then it kind of sucks. Also did not realize how much of a Floridian I was until I got here and realized how low my tolerance for cold is.

In other news, I decided to experiment with sewing this week. A couple that I know who have been very nice to me had a baby boy. Their last name is Fox, so I decided to try to make a stuffed fox for the baby. I have never sewn a stuffed animal before, nor have I used a sewing machine for more than a few minor repairs on clothing and the pillow we sewed in Home Ec seventh grade. I also could not find any patterns anywhere for a simple fox. In conclusion, this whole process has been... interesting.

My first attempt at a pattern ended up far different than I imagined (the red one) and I think it looks more like a cat with a mustache than a fox. I made it small as a sort of prototype, and while it has it's charms, I'm glad I did a test one first.

The blue one is the one I think I'm going to give my friends. It's got its share of flaws (eye too high, seams don't exactly line up, a little lumpy in places) but it's made of fleece and super soft and huggable, so it's good for a baby I think.

Anyways, that's about the most I've created in a while, so I thought an update was in order. I have lots of leftover fabric scraps, so I may play around and make more little plushie things... we'll see.

Will update again sooner that last time! Promise.

Since it's my last week at Kaman's, I've decided to take pictures of all my sketches. This means my terrible ones too.

So, in order, here's the five sketches I did today.

Mermaid bodies are one of my favorites to draw.

Spot the Jared. Also note the way his goatee only connects on one side. Apparently it just grows that way.

My favorite of the day. The girl wanted to make it very clear to me that she was pregnant, not fat, hence the "baby in here."

Last minute sketch. Rushed it too much, don't really like it. Her eye's all wonky.

These are just a few things I've done (fairly) recently that I like.

There's a rhino habitat right behind one of our stands. Unfortunately, you might see the rhino like ten minutes out of a day, so had reference for the habitat, but not for the rhino. One of the first things I colored with my prismacolor marker set.

Just a really sketchy owl.

I've been working text into images lately. I like drawing jellyfish. I'm sad this one is slightly crumpled though.

Did this for Ben before he left to go home to KC. Kara and I were thinking about going to a show he was playing in Orlando the day before he left, but it turned out to be much later and much further away than we thought we could handle.

We ended up watching Disney movies instead, and well...

I find the resemblance uncanny.

Yes, after a long time, I've started taking pictures of caricatures I've drawn in the park again. I've been feeling a little unmotivated to improve art at work, so maybe if I take pictures more, I'll start feeling like I need to progress.

Pros: I actually like this one. I think it looks like the kid, especially around the eyes.

Cons: One of the eyebrows looks like it's about to float off somewhere. I don't know why I did that.

I drew this girl today. She wanted me to draw her striking a pose, but I don't do that stuff (poses/making faces suck. The people go all bug-eyed trying to keep them, and it makes it so I don't have the freedom to do what I want with their features.) She seemed a little sulky, and when I asked to take her photo for my blog, she just sat like that and didn't respond, so I took it for a yes. I'm really not sure if she liked it - but her friends thought it was hilarious, so I'm happy.

Pros: I like the glasses and the lips.

Cons: Messy coloring and I fudged the jawline a little.

This one I'm just including because it's probably the most adorable thing I've ever drawn. The girl had fallen asleep by the time I finished it, so I don't have a reference, but she was just as cute as it looks.

Pros: It's so CUTE. Look at the bee - LOOK AT IT.

Cons: The feet were not planned well.

I'm going to tack on the two prints I've mentioned but kept forgetting to post. They aren't photographing well, so I've given up and here's the best you're getting. Deal with it.

Believe it or not, the colors are a little more florescent on the original.

I temporarily forgot I can't use acrylic paint to save my life. After a week of trying to work with it(with mostly disastrous results) I painted this of Ben Bloss at art night a week ago.

I like it. I still hate acrylics.

So, I've been super lazy and not uploading my prints like I was supposed to a bajillion years ago (aka two months) so here's ones I took photos of that DIDN'T come out terribly fuzzy - and I'll get the rest later.

This one's a "colograph," which means we had to build up a plate instead of carving out one - which meant that it was difficult to get sharp lines or clear spaces because we had to smush the colors all over the place. When she showed me the examples, they all looked very primitive, so I decided to embrace that and wanted to do a portrayal of a myth. I kinda just combined a couple of stories I've heard before and made my own. The idea is a hunter shot down a bird, but when its mate sang so sadly he felt compassion for it and took a feather from the bird he shot, fashioning an arrow, and shot it's mate because he knew that was the only way they could be together. When he shot it, there was a rush of wind and both birds flew away and disappeared.

This one isn't near so complicated as the other. To really explain it, you'd have to see another print I did - the teacher asked us to draw something unlike our usual style, so I decided on a house because I'm terrible at drawing architectural things. Then I decided the drawing was too boring - so I looked through some other stuff I did, and found a picture of an octopus I had drawn. I pretty much just drew in the octopus on top of the house for the heck of it, I thought it was funny.

Anyways, our last assignment was to make a set of prints that we'd exchange and everyone in the class would get one. So, I decided to continue the theme from the octopus print, which had been my favorite, and the one everyone remembered. Hence, the jellyfish over a city skyline.

And believe it or not, the green is much brighter than it looks here - more neon, less pukey.

Comic Book Project

So here's the comic book project I did for my art history class, the one entitled "Copy Cats." The professor is a little eccentric, (another person who was in my class did a pretty accurate animation of one of his lectures) but basically the course talked a lot about Aristotle and his ideas of tragedy and comedy, and some "theories on mimesis," or basically as artists why we copy and what we copy.

For my final project I chose the comic book option, and decided to turn Oedipus Rex, a story we had gone over as the perfect example of tragedy, into a comedy. Oh, and the professor loves cartoons and anime and anything campy, so I was trying to appeal to his tastes.

Also, since the theme was "copy cats" I incorporated some things from other comics into mine.

The dinosaur on the first page is based off of T-Rex from Dinosaur Comics

"Fat Pony" on page five (and some influence on my style for the comic) is from Kate Beaton's comics

Almost all of page seven is copied and slightly modified from "300" by Frank Miller (the comic book not the movie)

And of course the story was from Sophocles's Oedipus Rex, which having some prior knowledge of will make this comic much easier to understand.

Also, I did all of this in like two nights, so the art started to get really crappy towards the end. It's really noticeable about the time Jocasta comes into the picture... her and the captain of the guard are about the worst things I've ever drawn.

By the way, my professor really liked it and gave me extra credit, so I ended up with a 100.5 for the class. :)

This week I'll get my prints from the whole semester of printmaking up, and then maybe I'll scan in an awful comic book I did for my crazy art history class.

In the meantime, here's something I did while watching tv just to remind myself that I do know how to use photoshop - it's been a long time. It's not finished, but I like it so far.

Since my walls are so big and empty, I've been creating a wall decal by cutting out shapes in contact paper. This is what I've got so far, and I'll probably add more later.

Didn't decide to take a picture of this one until after they had left (hence why it's in the bag, waiting for package pick-up.) I just haven't posted any black and whites, and this one was the first in-park drawing I really got to use the gray copic on.

The picture I snapped of this couple really doesn't do justice to his crazy blue fish-eyes. Hers is pretty meh, but I really liked how I drew the expression he had (which of course changed when I got a picture of him.)

FINISHED

So I'm sure everyone else is as sick of this picture as I am, but it's FINALLY DONE. I am NOT working on it anymore. I am done. Even though I'm not happy with the hair and there's some weird kind of shadow next to the head on the right, I am done. Mostly because I've gotten to that point where I absolutely hate it and feel like I have to fix everything, and I know from experience if I touch it now I'll end up ruining it.

Gouache has been weird to work with - at first I loved it, and then I started to realize some of its limitations and hated certain elements of it. I simultaneously feel like I overworked it, and didn't work it enough.

I also kinda regret the background choice, and had a really hard time finding a color to paint the frame that would go with it - the yellow I chose is slightly less mustardy than the picture makes it look (I played with the contrast and color levels in photoshop a lot, but the colors are still a little off) and it kinda looks good, but at the same time I think it's probably too bright. But the only other colors I could seem to find that didn't outright clash was a dark maroon red (which made the background look like the fires of hell) and dark blue (but I couldn't find spray paint in the right shade.)

But, the important thing is I finished my first studio-caricature, and I have it done in time for the show. Now I should go to bed before I give in to the temptation to redo the entire thing.

I made more vases! Yay! The middle one is currently my favorite, and the one on the right I don't really like at all. The left one continues in a rainbow-ish color pattern, and the middle one has different tree-bird-cloud scenes on each side. The one on the right I was trying to be a bit random with the colors, which didn't really work out the way I wanted it to. I was uninspired by it, so I just threw on some flowers drawn on the text of some diabetes medication adverts and other boring stuff.

Also, this is what House looks like at the moment. It seems like the closer I get to finishing it, the less I want to work on it. Pretty much the only thing that's changed is he has both shoulders, a cane, and I managed to make the background even brighter than before somehow.

Quick vote - should I put the Vicodin bottle in or no? I kinda don't want to draw it in there, because the positioning is awkward, but I think a caricature of House really needs it. Opinions?

Half finished House

I've been working on this painting for a few days now (by which I mean for four hours or so two days ago, and half an hour today) but there's still quite a bit to be done. Things like his other shoulder, finishing his hair, the cane with the Vicodin bottle perched on it, and changing the flourescent orange background I started. It's gouache (a wonderful paint that's somewhere in between tube watercolors and acrylic paint in consistency for those unfamiliar to it) and it's (obviously) Hugh Laurie as House. There's a caricature show coming up in the near future, and I wanted to have something to add to it. I'm hoping to finish this and start/finish one of Eddie Izzard (in a dress!) before the deadline (in about a week!) so wish me luck.

Newest craft project

The beads were getting tiresome, so I started covering cheap vases with magazine clippings. I really like the effect, and I'm pretty happy with what I've got so far. Here's the three I've made, two with cherry blossom patterns (the flowers are drawn on craft paper) and one with a subtle leaf-and-berry pattern. They've been coated with a sealer, and are so far proving pretty sturdy. If I get the method perfected, and get an interest, I might start making ones to sell on Etsy or otherwise.

I love to draw, but really my passion is simply to make stuff, whether it be drawings, painting, or jewelry or random things I don't even have purposes for.

In this case, here's a bracelet I made of paper beads today. I haven't made paper beads since I was about 8, but I had a lot of free time today and didn't want to go anywhere for fear of spending money, so I spent most of the day reading and doing this.

This one I just liked for some reason.

He asked to be skydiving, and I was pretty proud of myself for pulling it off.

These two had just gotten engaged two days before, and she was very VERY excited about it. She asked for the ring to be in the picture, and for her to be smiling. Then she mentioned the engagement at least once a minute. They seemed pretty happy with it, even said they were going to use it for their announcements.

I'm still not drawing stuff I'm really proud of yet at BG, but here's some sketches I like, just to get a sense of what I do all day.

The woman had a shirt that said "I Bite" on it, so I tried to be clever with it. T-shirts are usually a great place to insert your own jokes or digs at the person.

This couple sat down one at a time, so I didn't get a picture of both of them as they were, so you can't see it but the woman had a gold tooth with a heart cutout on it. I usually am terrible at making couples sketches have good interaction, so I tried bring them together a little more by having hearts come out of her tooth and wrap around him.

I think the whole reason this couple got their caricature done is because the woman wanted his chin on paper. I have two things I really dislike about this sketch - she smiled a little sideways, but my attempt to draw that just looks kind of awkward, and the arms at their sides make it really obvious just how bad I am at interaction.

A piece I'm working on

So this is something I drew on Wednesday. It's not finished, but I'm not sure where I'm going with it yet. It's too purely decorative at this point - which is okay sometimes, but I personally wanted more out of it.

It needs some kind of background, but I'm afraid if I add one I'll sacrifice the contrast of the black and white tree with the colored cranes... because if I make the background black and white, it'll make the detail on the tree less obvious, but if I make it colored the cranes will fade into it.

I considered making clouds out of the silver ink but then the strings will fade away. Also, none of these things are going to transform it out of "purely decorative" yet... I need something more interesting in there. Problem is I really don't have a concept for it... I just have been drawing paper cranes a lot recently and wanted to do something with them.
